Applications of Precision Machining

At Temper Corporation, we produce parts for aerospace, automotive, power generation, mining equipment, oil refineries, and more. We create gauges, fixtures, and tooling for quality verification/inspection to ensure that our products are made measurable within desired tolerances. We have the ability to heat treat dies, shears, knives, and small-sized tool steel for high-precision form roll tooling, which is typically held to a 0.0001-inch or better tolerance.

Precision machining facilitates the mass production of parts requiring consistency at high speeds. Our team understands that repeatability is essential in mass production of high-quality goods, so we conduct automated inspections using our Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) to provide verification that the parts we fabricate meet desired specifications.

Temper can also handle lower-volume orders, including prototypes. We can run replacement parts when you don’t have time to wait on OEM parts to ship. Using our Coordinate Measuring Machine, we can easily get accurate measurements to re-create a part.

Our production requirements determine the best equipment to precision machine our parts. We use appropriately sized equipment for each order so we will not push the limits of the machine. A smaller part will be machined on a smaller piece of equipment designed for that size work and likewise for larger work.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Precision Machining Used For?

Precision machine tools fabricate extremely accurate parts, often down to the single-digit micron range when required. Fine-tuned parts, complex assemblies, and sensitive machinery all require precision machining. Precision machining doesn't just create highly accurate profiles — these processes also ensure that grooves, holes, tapers, and threads are precisely right for future assembly and use. At Temper, we regularly produce parts with tolerance levels within 0.0002 inches or better.

How Does Precision Machining Work?

Computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools offer feeding accuracy, flexibility in programing, reduced labor cost, better cutting tools, and material flexibility. The use of CNC machinery allows precision shops to maximize profitability, output, and quality.  Some of our machines are equipped with automatic tool breakage detection, as well as internal gauging that monitors operations in-progress to ensure adherence to accepted tolerances.

Creating a precision-machined part begins with the development of a digital 3D drawing using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This software helps to identify and eliminate design errors and provides a visual image of the part prior to manufacturing. The CAD file is then translated into computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) instructions that the CNC machinery can follow.

Precision Machining Capabilities

Our precision machining equipment is compatible with a variety of materials, including but not limited to:

  • Aluminum
  • Copper
  • Ni 200
  • Nitronic 60
  • Plastics
  • Polymers
  • Stainless steel
  • Titanium
  • Tungsten

Precision CNC machining produces an expansive range of items for applications ranging from daily consumer use to industrial machine parts. Some examples include screws, medical device components, automobile parts, aircraft components, heavy truck parts, turbine components, hardware, and more.

Precision Machining Services

At Temper, our precision machining services include:

  • CNC turning/lathes. Turning rotates the workpiece on a spindle as the cutting tool is applied to make precise cuts. CNC turning machines can cut on up to 5 axes, depending on the equipment. This machinery is best for making cylindrical parts.
  • CNC milling. Available in horizontal and vertical orientations, CNC milling machines apply rotating cutting tools to a stationary workpiece. Advanced equipment can make simultaneous cuts on up to 5-axes simultaneously.
  • Heat treating. Numerous heat treating processes can alter the physical properties of a workpiece’s base material. Common heat treatments include tempering, annealing, and hardening.
  • Laser cutting. Laser cutting offers precision cuts on an expansive range of material types using a high-powered laser beam. This cutting method offers clean cuts with minimal material waste.
  • Laser etching. Laser etching provides long-lasting marking in the substrate of a workpiece. Etching can be used to mark lot and batch numbers, bar codes, logos, branding, and more.
  • Swiss CNC Machining. Initially designed to fabricate miniscule parts used in Swiss watches, these machines are adept for creating highly accurate small-sized parts in a variety of applications.
